Real wedding: Moody red hues and 2010s club anthems at The Trust

When Kate and Jack approached us with their brief for a Friday night celebration at The Trust in Melbourne, they did not just want a wedding, they wanted a high energy journey through time. Set against a black tie dress code and an aesthetic of darker, richer reds, the atmosphere was primed for a fun yet classy evening that would eventually transform into a full blown warehouse style party.

With The Soundtrack’s DJ Dan behind the decks, the energy was personal from the very first beat. The goal was clear: bridge the gap between their 86 year old guests and the couple’s early 30s friends who spent their prime years in the club scene.

The night was a masterclass in reading the room, starting with cinematic background scores and ending with a high energy blend of indie rock and electronic bangers that left the well-dressed crowd sweaty and smiling.

“Dan was an incredible DJ - he was awesome at reading the room and the vibes.”

The brief: Sophisticated noir meets 2012 dance floor

The vision for Kate and Jack’s big day was a "mix it up and go with the crowd" philosophy. They wanted the music to mirror the progression of the evening, starting with classic, soulful background tracks like Liquid Lunch by Caro Emerald during the sit down dinner, before shifting gears into the nostalgia of 2011 to 2014 club culture.

The challenge was catering to a 50/50 split of family and friends. To ensure everyone felt the groove, they requested 70s and 80s tracks to get the "oldies" moving early on, with the explicit instruction for DJ Dan to read the room and transition into modern hits as the night matured.

The Soundtrack: From sentimental to sweat inducing

The musical highlights began long before the first dance. The couple curated a cinematic entry sequence, with the groom’s parents entering to The Power of Love and the bride’s parents following with Robbie Williams' Rock DJ. However, the real showstopper was the first dance: a choreographed transition using Fleetwood Mac’s Seven Wonders.

The couple started together, but at the 1:45 mark, the moment expanded into a family affair. Kate grabbed her dad, Jack grabbed his mother, and eventually, the entire wedding party flooded the floor to bridge the gap into the party set.

3 songs that defined the night:

  • The transition: September by Earth, Wind & Fire. The official "party starter" that got all generations on their feet.

  • The nostalgia trip: Levels by Avicii. A nod to the couple's clubbing days, mixed specifically to peak the energy late in the night.

  • The "mum" moment: Angels by Robbie Williams. A special request for Kate’s mum that turned into a massive crowd singalong.

The champagne tower entrance

Kate and Jack used it to amplify their entrance momentum. They walked straight from their formal entry to the tune of Hooked on a Feeling by Blue Swede directly to the tower pour. This seamless flow meant there was never a "lull" in the action. The celebration moved at a clip that kept guests engaged and energised from the moment they sat down.

Even the "filler" moments were curated for laughs, with Be Our Guest from Beauty & The Beast playing as guests first entered the dining space, setting a fun, tongue in cheek tone before the formalities even began.

Double the DJ set-up, zero the lulls

To ensure a premium audio experience from the first cocktail to the final banger, we coordinated a sophisticated dual-area set-up. It was a priority for us to maintain professional sound and live DJing across the entire night without any awkward silence during room transitions.

DJ Dan managed two distinct zones:

  • The dinner space: A sleek, minimal set-up on the bar featuring a Bose S1 Pro speaker and wireless mic for a polished background vibe as guests were seated.

  • The dance floor: A full-scale powerhouse set-up, integrated into the venue's sound ceiling system with additional speakers to handle the high-energy sets later in the night.

This approach meant that as guests moved from dinner to the dance floor, the music was already waiting for them, perfectly levelled and ready to go.
