Venue spotlight: Industrial romance and epic parties at Rupert on Rupert, Collingwood

When you step off the unassuming backstreets of Collingwood and through the doors of Rupert on Rupert (or “Rupert” as it’s normally called), you’re entering another world. It’s one of those rare Melbourne gems that manages to feel both incredibly grand and intimately cozy all at once.

As DJs who spend a lot of time in unique spaces, we can confidently say there is nowhere quite like Rupert. It is the ultimate playground for couples who want to ditch the "cookie-cutter" wedding vibes in favour of something with soul, character, and a serious amount of greenery.

The vibe: lush, moody, and sophisticated

Rupert is famous for its "urban jungle" aesthetic. Imagine soaring ceilings, polished concrete, and those iconic dark teal walls that make every floral arrangement (and every guest) look like a million bucks. The space is filled with an eclectic mix of vintage furniture and an absolute forest of indoor plants, creating a backdrop that is naturally stunning before you even add your own styling.

Whether you’re planning a sun-drenched afternoon ceremony under the glass roof or a moody, candlelit seated dinner, the transition is seamless. It’s industrial, yes, but the warmth of the wood and the softness of the foliage give it a romantic edge that’s hard to beat.

The team at Rupert

Behind every great venue is a team that actually cares, and Rupert has some of the best in the business. Owners Mali and Rick are incredibly hands-on, ensuring that the venue maintains its high standards and unique soul. They aren't just "behind the scenes" owners; they are deeply invested in making sure every client feels like they’ve found a home for their celebration.

Then there is Katie, the venue manager and a total all-star. When it comes to wedding logistics, Katie is the steady hand you want behind the scenes. She is a powerhouse of organization and hospitality, working seamlessly with vendors (like us!) to make sure the transition from ceremony to dance floor is flawless. Having a team this dedicated means you can actually relax and enjoy your party.

The Flow: from pre-drinks celebration

Most couples choose to get hitched in the breathtaking atrium. With its glass roof and abundance of natural light and greenery, it feels like an outdoor ceremony with the safety of a permanent roof (very necessary with the unpredictable weather in Melbourne!).

Depending on your chosen format - cocktail or sit-down - the venue then opens up into different configurations to keep the energy high. Some couples will elect for their guests to enjoy some pre-drinks, which are generally held in the front bar, before moving to the atrium.

Once the "I dos" are done, guests enjoy drinks in the atrium and back bar while the dining room is set (for a sit down dinner). If it’s a cocktail format, guests usually have free rein of the venue, with the drinks and dance floor in the dining room (front room) attracting the majority of guests.

The logistics of a seamless day

One of the standout features of Rupert on Rupert is how incredibly "DJ-friendly" the space is. The venue boasts a high-quality, venue-wide sound system that covers every corner. For us, it’s a dream - we can simply plug our professional controllers directly into their existing infrastructure, ensuring an easy way to get the party started. While Rupert has a microphone for speeches, our DJs will always bring one of their own, too.

If you’ve booked your DJ to start from the cocktail hour or dinner onwards, you don't have to worry about the silence during your ceremony. The team at Rupert are absolute pros at managing the in-house sound system; they can seamlessly play your key moment songs (your processional, signing, and recessional) before the DJ even arrives. It’s that level of professional coordination that keeps the day running like clockwork.

Choosing your layout: cocktail vs. sit-down

Rupert is a bit of a shapeshifter, and depending on your guest list, there are two main ways to utilise the floor plan.

The sit-down soirée

For a formal seated dinner, the long tables are usually set in the main dining area towards the back. In this format, the DJ typically sets up in the sun-drenched atrium. Because the dining space is used first, we usually time our setup for just after guests have moved into the dining room, ensuring the equipment is ready to go the moment the speeches wrap up. As the night progresses, the dance floor naturally spills out from the bar and into the atrium, creating a high-energy party zone.

The cocktail celebration

If you’re opting for a more relaxed, cocktail-style event, the vibe shifts to the front of the venue. All the main action - the speeches, the cake cutting, and the dancing - happens in the front bar area. This creates a great dynamic where the back room bar becomes a "chill-out" haven. It’s the perfect spot for a "disco break" or for older guests who want to enjoy a cocktail and a chat without feeling like they’ve left the party.

Why we love playing at Rupert

From a music and party perspective, Rupert on Rupert is a dream. The layout is perfectly designed for a celebration that flows.

The atmosphere

The acoustics in the main space are fantastic. In many industrial warehouses, sound can bounce uncomfortably, but Rupert has a natural warmth that balances the audio nicely. Whether we’re providing a chilled-out, soulful backdrop for cocktail hour or ramping things up for a high-energy dance floor, the sound fills the room beautifully without losing that intimate "dinner party" feel.

You can have a thumping dance floor in one section while guests just a few metres away can still enjoy a conversation without shouting - it’s a rare acoustic feat. This is because Rupert has the ability to “zone” the sound for the different areas in the venue. It makes it easy to turn it down a little out the back, so that the party can keep going out front!

The versatility

We’ve seen every kind of celebration here, and the venue handles them all with ease. We’ve played for relaxed ceremonies where the couple opts for a "no first dance" policy and goes straight from the ceremony into a high-octane party.

Because the vibe is so adaptable, we’ve programmed everything from 80s synth-pop and disco to classic house and Triple J-heavy sets. No matter your musical niche, the venue’s edgy-yet-refined aesthetic provides the perfect canvas.

The food and drink

Let’s be real - the hospitality at Rupert is legendary. Their wood-fired pizzas and Mediterranean-inspired menu are always a hit (and believe us, a well-fed guest is a guest who stays on the dance floor longer!).

The bar service is equally impressive, serving up specialty cocktails that are actually dangerous in the best way possible. From the first pour of bubbles to the late-night snacks, the culinary experience here is a massive step up from traditional wedding catering.

The "Rupert" factor

What really sets this venue apart is the feeling of being in a "local" spot that just happens to be world-class. It’s trendy without being pretentious. It’s the kind of place where guests feel comfortable enough to really let loose, which, as you know, is the secret ingredient for an epic party.

If you’re looking for a venue that feels authentically Melbourne-edgy, lush, and full of personality, Rupert on Rupert should be at the very top of your list. (If you want to get a really good sense of the vibe there, we highly recommend you check out their Instagram reels!).
