A guide to guest song requests (and how our DJs handle them)

THE SOUNDTRACK DJs are more than happy to take guest requests, but it’s what they DO with them that matters!

A packed dance floor at a wedding or event is a beautiful thing. It means the energy is right, the celebration is in full swing, and everyone is having a great time. It also usually means your guests will have some song ideas of their own.

It’s one of the most common questions we get: “Do your DJs take requests from guests?”

The short answer is: yes, absolutely!

However, our DJs field requests using a professional process. It’s a carefully crafted skill designed to honour your vision while keeping the party's momentum going all night long. Here’s a look at how it works.

Your Party Brief is our guide

First and foremost, every decision our DJ makes is guided by the comprehensive Party Brief you prepare with your dedicated Party Manager (us, Eddy or Aleks!). This document is the DJ’s roadmap for the night, and it’s where we capture your style, musical tastes, and the overall vibe you want to create.

Most importantly, it contains your must-play and do-not-play lists. Your do-not-play list is sacred. If a guest requests a song that’s on that list, our DJs will politely decline, no exceptions.

Reading the room, and the request

When a guest requests a song, your DJ runs it through a quick mental filter. They’re not just asking, “Is this a good song?”. They’re asking:

  • Does it fit the brief? Does this track align with the genres and artists you love? Does it fit the atmosphere you’ve asked us to create?

  • Is this the right time? A great song played at the wrong moment can disrupt the flow of your event. Our DJs are masters at tailoring their sets to the vibe, seamlessly transitioning from background tunes to dance floor classics when the time is right. A dance-floor banger won’t work during dinner, but we can save it for later.

  • Will it work for the crowd? Our DJs are chosen for their ability to read the room and get guests from every generation groovin’ on that dance floor. They will use their experience to judge if a request will be a dance-floor hit or a vibe-killer.

The verdict: play it now, play it later, or politely pass

Based on the answers to those questions, your DJ will make a call.

  • Play it now: The request is a perfect fit for the brief and the moment. Awesome!

  • Play it later: It’s a great song, but better suited for later in the night. Your DJ will make a note and aim to play it when the energy is right.

  • Politely pass: If the request is on the do-not-play list or is completely off-brief, your DJ will gently let the guest know. Often, they’ll ask for another suggestion that might be a better fit for your event.

It’s a simple process that takes all the guesswork out of the night. You can trust that our hand-picked DJs will handle requests with professionalism and skill, ensuring your event’s soundtrack is a true reflection of you.
